Exercise & FitnessThe Four-Pillar Framework for Getting Soccer Players Back to Peak Performance After ACL Surgery
ACL reconstruction is common in soccer players and while most return to competition, many suffer persistent performance deficits and high re-injury rates. This review proposes a structured 'Return to Performance' continuum with four stages: on-field rehabilitation, return to team training, return to competitive play, and sustained performance. Four interdependent pillars support the process — restoring movement quality, rebuilding technical and tactical skills, reconditioning football-specific physical capacities like speed and endurance, and recovering maximal strength and explosive neuromuscular output. The framework aims to close the critical gap between standard return-to-sport clearance and true performance restoration, reducing early re-injury risk and protecting career longevity in professional and amateur soccer players alike.
