Potassium Chloride Salt Substitutes Lower Blood Pressure and May Cut Stroke Risk

High sodium intake kills millions annually through elevated blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease, while most people fall far short of recommended potassium intake. Potassium chloride salt substitutes offer a practical dual fix: reducing sodium while boosting potassium. Ten studies covering 11 randomized controlled trials show that partial replacement of regular salt with potassium chloride significantly lowers blood pressure in people with hypertension. At a 75/25 sodium-to-potassium chloride ratio, most users couldn't detect a taste difference. Beyond blood pressure, potassium independently reduces stroke risk by limiting clot formation, arterial stiffening, and free radical generation. Higher potassium intake is associated with a 20% lower risk of premature death, while higher sodium is linked to a 20% higher risk.
