Poor Walking Efficiency Linked to Worse Bladder Symptoms in Older Adults

Researchers from the Study of Muscle, Mobility and Aging examined whether cardiorespiratory fitness and walking energy costs predict lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in 629 adults aged 70 and older. They measured peak oxygen consumption, the energetic cost of slow walking, and a cost-capacity ratio combining both metrics. Higher walking energy cost and a higher cost-capacity ratio were linked to more severe urinary symptoms in preliminary models, though some associations weakened after full adjustment. Notably, higher walking energy cost was associated with greater odds of urinary incontinence in men specifically. Peak aerobic fitness alone did not predict LUTS. The findings suggest that as walking consumes a larger share of an older adult's energy reserves, bladder symptoms worsen — pointing to energetic efficiency as a potential intervention target.
