Longevity & AgingPlant Compounds May Target the Cellular Breakdown Behind Age-Related Muscle Loss
Age-related muscle loss threatens strength and independence. This narrative review explores whether plant compounds could protect muscle by improving the removal of damaged cellular energy generators, reducing excessive protein breakdown, and limiting cell death. The authors discuss several broad families of plant chemicals, including polyphenols and flavonoids, rather than establishing one effective treatment. Major barriers remain: the abstract reports that oral availability is often below one percent, gut microbes influence how these compounds are processed, and phase III trials are absent. Nanoscale delivery systems and approaches involving gut microbes are proposed as possible solutions. These ideas could guide future drug development, but they do not establish that supplements prevent or reverse muscle loss. This summary is based on the abstract only, which provides no treatment doses or measured improvements in human strength.
