Longevity & AgingMuscle-Fat Ratio Predicts Bone Density Differently in Men vs Women
Researchers analyzed body composition data from 4,349 middle-aged Americans (NHANES 2011–2018) to examine how the ratio of skeletal muscle mass to visceral fat area (SVR) relates to lumbar bone mineral density. In men, higher SVR consistently predicted higher bone density. In premenopausal women, the relationship was non-linear — bone density peaked at an optimal SVR near 0.31 kg/cm², then declined at higher ratios. Postmenopausal women showed no significant SVR-BMD association, likely reflecting the overriding influence of estrogen loss. The findings underscore that muscle and fat should be assessed together, not in isolation, and that bone health strategies need to be tailored by sex and hormonal status.
