Mapping the Evidence Gap in Pediatric Perioperative IV Fluid Management

Intravenous fluid management during pediatric surgery is largely guided by adult-derived recommendations, with limited child-specific evidence. This scoping review protocol outlines a systematic plan to map existing research on perioperative IV fluid use in patients under 18 undergoing non-cardiac surgery. Using JBI methodology and PRISMA-ScR guidelines, researchers will search major databases including MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL, and others, with no date restrictions. The review will cover all three perioperative phases—preoperative fasting, intraoperative, and early postoperative periods—examining outcomes such as electrolyte balance, acid-base status, renal function, glycemic stability, and hemodynamic effects. The goal is to characterize the scope and heterogeneity of existing evidence and identify gaps to inform a future systematic review.
