Cancer ResearchHeart Calcium Scans Narrow Statin Recommendations but Leave Prevention Questions Open
Heart calcium scans may help doctors target statin recommendations more selectively, but a major trial has not established that this strategy protects patients as effectively as conventional risk assessment. The CorCal Outcomes study included nearly 5,800 adults and reported the same observed rate of major cardiovascular events over four years with either approach, despite fewer statin recommendations in the scan group. Among adults advised to take statins, those receiving recommendations based on scans were nearly three times as likely to follow them. This suggests imaging could support more personalized prevention discussions and better medication adherence. However, matching observed event rates does not prove equal protection. The supplied report is incomplete, and readers should discuss uncertain treatment decisions with a clinician rather than stop statins or seek scans automatically.
