Heart HealthGLP-1 Drugs Reduce Cardiovascular Risk, but New Analysis Cannot Rank Them Reliably
GLP-1 drugs help reduce major cardiovascular events, but this analysis could not reliably determine which drug offers the most protection or how benefits change over time. Researchers combined ten trials involving 87,334 participants and eight treatment regimens. Their standard analysis found about a 14 percent lower relative hazard of major cardiovascular events compared with placebo. A more complex model explored when benefits appeared and whether treatment prevented events or improved survival afterward. Semaglutide showed a possible pattern of stronger early protection that weakened over time, but the estimates were too uncertain to establish that pattern. Important modeling assumptions and unstable results limited comparisons between drugs. Based on the abstract alone, the findings support overall cardiovascular benefits, not switching medications or assuming protection fades with continued treatment.
