Brain HealthGLP-1 Drugs Lead Peptide-Based Approaches to Addiction Treatment
Drugs that influence the brain’s reward, stress, and appetite signals could offer new approaches to addiction treatment. This narrative review examined fifteen peptide signaling systems using research published from January 2000 through July 2026. Among the systems reviewed, GLP-1 receptor agonists had the strongest clinical evidence, particularly for alcohol use disorder. Evidence for nicotine, cocaine, and opioid use disorders remained limited. Oxytocin and several other approaches showed encouraging early findings, while some targets failed to deliver consistent clinical benefits. Many candidates remain confined largely to laboratory and animal research. Better drug design and delivery might help, but these possibilities do not establish treatment effectiveness. The practical takeaway is to watch this developing field without replacing established addiction care. This summary relies on the abstract, which provides no numerical treatment effects or detailed safety findings.
