Brain HealthGLP-1 Drugs Fail to Improve Alzheimer's Outcomes in Analysis of Seven Trials
GLP-1 drugs such as semaglutide and liraglutide help with diabetes and weight loss, and some researchers hoped they might also protect the brain. This meta-analysis pooled seven randomized trials in people with Alzheimer's disease or mild cognitive impairment, covering 4,132 participants with an average age of 72. Compared with placebo or standard care, GLP-1 drugs did not improve memory and thinking scores or slow overall disease progression. Patients on the drugs had more side effects and were about five times more likely to lose weight. Brain scan and blood marker results were mixed and did not translate into clinical benefit. The authors conclude that GLP-1 drugs did not improve cognitive or functional outcomes, and suggest that future studies test them in carefully selected, biomarker-confirmed and metabolically selected patients, or use drugs that reach the brain better.
