Cancer ResearchGiredestrant Combination Delays Progression in Advanced Breast Cancer
An oral drug combination delayed worsening of advanced breast cancer after earlier hormone treatment stopped working. Researchers randomly assigned 373 patients to giredestrant plus everolimus or standard hormone therapy plus everolimus. Among patients whose tumors carried ESR1 mutations, the median time before cancer progression or death was 10.0 months with giredestrant versus 5.5 months with standard treatment. Across all participants, the corresponding times were 8.8 and 5.5 months. Side effects affected nearly everyone in both groups; mouth sores, diarrhea, and anemia were common. These findings suggest another potential treatment option, particularly for patients with ESR1 mutations, but do not establish longer overall survival. Patients should discuss tumor mutation testing and treatment options with their oncology team. This summary is based on the abstract only.
