Brain HealthCochrane Review Finds No Clear Motor Recovery Benefit From Levodopa After Stroke
Can medicines that boost dopamine help restore movement after a stroke? A Cochrane review examined 12 randomized trials involving 1,860 participants, mostly testing levodopa alongside rehabilitation. Overall, the researchers found no clear improvement in movement compared with placebo or usual care. Results varied widely, but the two trials judged most reliable, involving 1,025 participants, showed essentially no average benefit. Serious adverse events occurred at similar rates, although the evidence was too uncertain to establish equivalent safety. The findings do not support routinely adding these drugs solely to improve movement after stroke. They do not address prescribing for another established condition, such as Parkinson's disease. Evidence quality was low or very low, and future studies could identify benefits in particular patient groups. This summary is based on the abstract only.
