Cancer ResearchBreast Cancer Surging in Asian American Women at Rates Outpacing All Other Groups
A large UC San Francisco study analyzing 150,000 breast cancer cases found that invasive breast cancer rates are climbing faster among Asian American women than any other U.S. ethnic group. Increases exceeded 3% per year across nearly every Asian American subgroup, with the sharpest rises in women under 50 and in advanced or triple-negative cancers. Among Chinese American women, triple-negative breast cancer rose over 6% annually from 2017 to 2022. Researchers say increased screening cannot explain these trends, since the fastest-growing cancers were already at advanced stages when detected. Known lifestyle and reproductive risk factors only partially account for the surge, pointing to undiscovered biological or environmental contributors unique to these populations.
