A University of Illinois-led review of 18 randomized controlled trials found that mindfulness, gratitude journaling, and optimism exercises can lower blood pressure and reduce inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein and fibrinogen in as little as 8 to 12 weeks. Adults with elevated cardiovascular risk — including uncontrolled hypertension — saw the greatest benefits from programs that combined weekly structured sessions with daily reinforcement activities. One 12-week digital spirituality-based program cut systolic blood pressure by 7.6 points. Researchers noted that gains were partly tied to healthier behaviors like better diet and more physical activity, suggesting ongoing practice is needed to sustain results. These findings position positive psychology as a practical, low-cost add-on to standard cardiovascular care.
