Rachel

Here's a strange fact: one number from a treadmill test predicts long-term health better than plenty of things your doctor checks. What is it?

Drew

VO2 max. It sounds like a rejected robot name, but it's just the most oxygen your body can use during all-out effort.

Rachel

So basically engine size.

Drew

Yes. Bigger number, bigger engine. And it's one of the strongest fitness predictors of how well you age.

Rachel

Great. My engine is a lawnmower that's been in the garage since 2019.

Drew

Lawnmowers can be tuned up. Oxygen travels lungs, blood, heart, muscle, and your max is set by the weakest link.

Rachel

Okay, but where does the oxygen actually get used?

Drew

Mitochondria, tiny power plants inside your muscle cells that burn fuel with oxygen. Training builds more of them. It also raises stroke volume, which is how much blood each heartbeat squeezes out.

Rachel

So the heart pumps more, and the muscles get hungrier.

Drew

Both ends of the pipe improve. Very efficient. Unlike your garage.

Rachel

Rude. How do I find my number without a lab?

Drew

A smartwatch gives a rough estimate. Or do a timed walk or run test, like how far you get in twelve minutes. Watch the trend, not the exact digit.

Rachel

And how do I raise it?

Drew

Two ingredients. Lots of easy cardio, the pace where you can still talk. Plus a little hard stuff: intervals, a few breathless minutes, rest, repeat. That's where the evidence is strongest.

Rachel

Supplements? Beet juice? Please say beet juice.

Drew

Honestly, the evidence is thin. Beet juice has some small studies, but nothing beats training, sleep, and not smoking.

Rachel

So no magic pill. Just boring consistency.

Drew

Boring wins. This week, add one session where you get properly breathless, and keep the rest easy enough to chat.
