Drew, every cell in your body is wrapped in a layer of fat. Which sounds alarming but apparently is the whole reason you're alive?
Completely true. It's called the plasma membrane, and without it your cell is just soup. It controls what gets in, what gets out, and basically runs the entire operation.
Okay so what's it actually made of?
Phospholipids. Two layers of fat molecules arranged back to back — heads facing water, tails hiding from it. Every living thing on Earth uses this exact design.
Nature found one answer and stuck with it.
Thirty-eight billion years of not fixing what isn't broken, yes.
So what goes wrong as we age?
The membrane gets stiffer. Young membranes are fluid and flexible — signals travel fast, nutrients get in, waste gets out. Old ones are more like cold butter than warm olive oil.
Cold butter. That's what's happening inside me right now.
The specific villain is lipid peroxidation — your membrane fats reacting with oxygen and going rancid. Literally oxidizing. Cells rusting from the inside. The enzyme GPX4 normally stops this, but it gets overwhelmed with age.
So what actually rebuilds the membrane?
Omega-3 fatty acids — EPA and DHA from fatty fish or fish oil — directly incorporate into the membrane and restore that fluidity. The research on this is genuinely solid.
How much fish are we talking?
Two to three servings of fatty fish a week, or a fish oil supplement. Studies typically use one to two grams of combined EPA and DHA daily. Talk to your doctor about the right amount for you.
Anything else on Monday's to-do list?
Reduce seed oils high in omega-6, get consistent aerobic exercise — it literally changes membrane composition — and sleep well, because that's when oxidative damage gets repaired.
Give me the single thing to start with.
Eat salmon twice this week. Genuinely, that's it. Your membranes will be less like cold butter and more like whatever the good version of butter is.
