Rachel

So Drew, apparently my body has a repair crew that just... stops showing up?

Drew

Pretty much. It's called Wnt signaling — pronounced 'wint' — and it's basically your cells' group chat for when something needs fixing.

Rachel

A group chat. So mine is on mute.

Drew

After forty, yeah, the notifications slow way down. Wnt proteins float between cells and dock onto surface receptors, which frees up a protein called beta-catenin — that's the actual repair boss — to rush into the cell's nucleus and switch on healing genes.

Rachel

And with age that whole relay breaks down?

Drew

The relay gets sluggish. Beta-catenin gets chewed up before it can do anything. Stem cells don't get the wake-up call. Tissue just... doesn't bounce back the way it used to.

Rachel

Okay so what do we actually do about it?

Drew

First lever: exercise, specifically resistance training. It mechanically stresses tissue in a way that genuinely nudges Wnt back on. Not a metaphor — the physical pull on cells upregulates the pathway.

Rachel

How often are we talking?

Drew

Research suggests two to three sessions a week is enough to see effect. Not hero stuff. Deadlifts, not marathons.

Rachel

What about the supplement world? People are obsessed with lithium right now.

Drew

Low-dose lithium is genuinely interesting here — it blocks the enzyme that destroys beta-catenin, so the repair boss stays active longer. But the evidence is early, dosing matters enormously, and this one is a talk-to-your-doctor situation, not a grab-it-off-Amazon situation.

Rachel

What about things people can actually do without a prescription?

Drew

Sleep is underrated. Deep sleep is when stem cell activity peaks. Cutting it short is like sending the repair crew home at noon. Also, omega-3s from fatty fish show supportive effects on Wnt in muscle tissue — real food, not heroic doses.

Rachel

And sauna? Everyone's doing sauna.

Drew

Heat stress does activate repair pathways including Wnt-adjacent ones. The evidence is promising but not locked in yet. I'd call it a reasonable bet, not a proven treatment.

Rachel

Okay, so if someone does one thing Monday morning?

Drew

Pick up something heavy, put it down, repeat. Resistance training is the most evidence-backed way to keep your body's repair signaling from going quiet — and you don't need a lab to prescribe it.
