Drew, there's a mineral you need less of than a grain of salt, and without it your cells basically rust. What is this thing?
Selenium. The daily target is 55 micrograms. A microgram is a millionth of a gram. You could lose it in your sock drawer.
So why does something invisible matter so much?
Because your body uses it as a custom part. Selenocysteine, the 21st amino acid, a rare building block that goes into just 25 proteins. Most of a machine is ordinary bolts, but a few spots need a special piece.
Okay, what do those special proteins actually do?
One is GPX4, a cleanup enzyme that keeps the fats in your cell walls from going rancid. Think of a sprinkler system. You hope it never fires, but you want it working.
Rancid, like butter left in a hot car.
Exactly. When GPX4 fails, cells can die by ferroptosis, which is cells rusting from the inside. To be honest, most of that work is in cells and animals, so nobody knows yet how much it drives human aging.
Does selenium do anything else?
Thyroid. Selenium-built enzymes called deiodinases switch thyroid hormone from dormant to active. The thyroid holds more selenium per gram than almost any organ.
So the thyroid is a tiny squirrel with a nut stash.
Which brings us to nuts. Brazil nuts are the famous source. Seafood, eggs, and meat help too. The amount in food depends on the soil, so the same bread can differ by region.
So Monday morning, I eat a bag of Brazil nuts?
No! A few can cover your day. A whole bag is how you end up with brittle nails, hair loss, and garlic breath without any garlic.
My snack drawer is suddenly under investigation. What about supplements?
Supplements haven't been shown to prevent cancer, and too much is genuinely toxic. If you eat a varied diet you're probably covered. With a thyroid condition or a very restricted diet, ask a clinician about testing.
Give me the one-liner.
Eat varied food with some seafood or eggs, throw in a Brazil nut now and then, and skip the megadose bottle.
