Rachel

One in three adults has a condition that almost never hurts, and most of them have no idea. It's hiding under your right ribs.

Drew

Your liver. Three pounds, five hundred jobs, zero complaints. It's the coworker who does everything and never sends an email.

Rachel

And never gets thanked. So what goes wrong?

Drew

Fatty liver, now called MASLD, which sounds like a Wi-Fi password. It's fat building up in the liver alongside metabolic trouble, like belly weight, high blood sugar, or high blood pressure.

Rachel

Why does age make it worse?

Drew

The liver loses its cushion. Less blood flow, slower repair, and the cells' energy makers get tired.

Rachel

Okay, name the thing. What's actually piling up?

Drew

Steatosis, which is fat droplets crowding inside liver cells, like carry-on bags jammed into every overhead bin. Normally mitochondria, the tiny power plants in each cell, burn that fat. With age and too much fuel coming in, they burn less, and the bins overflow.

Rachel

So the liver can burn it, ship it, or store it, and storage is winning.

Drew

Storage always wins. It's the junk drawer of the body.

Rachel

Fine. Monday morning. What do I actually do?

Drew

Modest weight loss improves liver fat, and bigger loss helps inflammation. Cut liquid sugar too, because it lands right on the liver. Exercise helps even if the scale doesn't budge.

Rachel

So my iced latte with four syrups is filing a complaint.

Drew

A formal one. Coffee itself is linked to healthier livers in observational studies. Not proof, but keep the mug. Lose the syrup.

Rachel

Supplements? Medications?

Drew

Supplement evidence is thin. Vitamin E has been studied in select people under a doctor's care. For the inflamed, scarring form, called MASH, newer drugs like resmetirom and semaglutide now exist. Doctors decide that, not Instagram.

Rachel

Last thing, the takeaway?

Drew

Walk after dinner, ditch liquid sugar, and if you've got belly weight, diabetes, or high blood pressure, ask about a liver blood test. Silent doesn't mean absent.
