Drew, what if I told you there's a fire alarm inside every single one of your cells, and as you get older it just... starts going off constantly for no reason?

Drew

I would say that sounds exactly like my neighbor's car alarm, and also yes, that's basically what's happening in your body.

Rachel

So what's actually triggering it?

Drew

DNA in the wrong place. Your DNA is supposed to stay locked inside the nucleus — think of it as the cell's filing room. When bits escape and float loose, a sensor called cGAS-STING flips out. cGAS is the detector that physically grabs stray DNA; STING is the dispatcher that calls in the immune army.

Rachel

And with age, more DNA leaks out?

Drew

Constantly. Your mitochondria get a little ratty, your nucleus gets a little leaky, and suddenly cGAS is finding DNA everywhere and just losing its mind.

Rachel

So this is what scientists call inflammaging — inflammation plus aging?

Drew

Exactly. Low-grade, slow-burning inflammation running for decades. No fever, no obvious symptoms. Just quietly wrecking your heart, your brain, your joints.

Rachel

Okay so what can we actually do about it?

Drew

Exercise is the biggest lever with the best evidence. Consistent aerobic exercise reduces inflammatory signaling — it also improves mitochondrial health, so less DNA leaks in the first place. You're fixing the leak, not just mopping the floor.

Rachel

What about food?

Drew

An anti-inflammatory dietary pattern — lots of plants, fatty fish, olive oil — is consistently associated with lower inflammatory markers. Nothing exotic. Salmon beats a pill most days.

Rachel

Any supplements worth mentioning?

Drew

Evidence is thinner here, but quercetin and fisetin — both compounds found in plants — are getting serious research attention for calming this exact pathway. Early days, not ready to prescribe yourself a protocol.

Rachel

What about sleep? Because I feel like you're about to say sleep.

Drew

I am absolutely about to say sleep. Poor sleep is one of the fastest ways to spike inflammatory markers. Your cells literally do repair work at night. Skimp on that and the DNA leaks get worse.

Rachel

Any therapies — like sauna or cold?

Drew

Sauna has decent evidence for reducing inflammatory load over time. Cold exposure has some signal too, though smaller. Both are probably doing good things for mitochondria, which addresses the source.

Rachel

Okay, one thing people can actually do tomorrow morning?

Drew

Thirty minutes of brisk walking. It genuinely moves the needle on mitochondrial health, which reduces the DNA leakage, which gives cGAS-STING fewer false alarms. Everything else builds on top of that.
