Okay, so your body forms tiny blood clots all the time and most of us never know. That's either reassuring or terrifying, Drew.
Little of both. The good news is you've also got a built-in demolition crew that tears those clots apart before they cause trouble.
Tell me about this crew.
So the star is plasmin — an enzyme that literally chews through fibrin, the stringy protein scaffolding that holds a clot together. Plasmin is your blood's tiny pac-man for clots.
But it needs to be switched on first, right?
Exactly. It starts as plasminogen, totally asleep in your blood. Then your vessel walls release tPA — tissue-type plasminogen activator — which wakes it up the moment a clot forms nearby.
tPA is also a drug emergency doctors use, isn't it?
Same molecule, concentrated. When you're having a stroke they're basically giving you a massive dose of what your body already makes. Which is humbling, honestly.
So what goes wrong as we age?
PAI-1. Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 — the brake on the whole system. It blocks tPA. A little PAI-1 is fine, keeps you from dissolving clots before wounds heal. But levels creep up with age, obesity, and poor sleep, and the brake just stays on.
So the cleanup crew never shows up and the clot lingers.
Bingo. And lingering clots are how heart attacks and strokes happen. The biology is basically your body forgetting to take out the trash.
Okay, Monday morning — what can someone actually do?
Exercise is the biggest lever. Even a brisk walk acutely boosts tPA release from vessel walls. Aerobic exercise consistently — research supports that. Not optional.
What else?
Omega-3s from fish oil show evidence for improving fibrinolytic balance. Low-dose aspirin is sometimes discussed but that's genuinely a conversation with your doctor. Keeping visceral fat low directly lowers PAI-1. And sleep — bad sleep spikes PAI-1 fast.
So the one takeaway?
Move more, sleep well, trim the belly fat. Boring advice, but it's literally keeping your clot-erasing system switched on. Your blood vessels will quietly thank you.
